We have been renting for so long and in houses and neighborhoods that weren’t really high crime target areas. The house we are currently renting has a security system but we had to unplug it because it started to go off in the middle if the night do to a storm and we couldn’t turn it off. Now that we are buying a new home, I am definitely more concerned and want to find what home security systems are out there in order to protect our home and family.
Video surveillance is becoming a more viable option for home owners nowadays due to the low cost of video surveillance cameras. Even some neighborhoods in wealthier areas are opting to use video surveillance for their entire neighborhood. The traditional home security systems are still in play and work with code systems that require knowing the correct code to access the home as well as disarm the alarm systems. I am more familiar with this type of system and am most likely to use this type of set up.
I am very interested though in the neighborhood approach to security for a small community. If combined with traditional home security a neighborhood could be protected from criminals driving in and stealing from several homes. If the neighborhood system was being used it would allow every neighbor to be able to monitor the comings and goings of everyone in the neighborhood and keep an eye out for potential criminals. That would truly be a very effective system due to how many people are out for most of the day and leave neighborhoods empty and open to preying criminals. The system would be particularly effective of it allowed for notifications every time someone drove onto your street. I would certainly be interested to receive notifications at work of people coming onto my street just to see what they are up to.
Maybe I am paranoid, but I think as a homeowner you want to make sure your house is safe. As a renter, I do want my belongings safe but I am not as keen on it as I would be if I owned the home. Wherever my family ends up you can be sure that we will have the best security available.

Friday, January 27th, 2012I remember planning my first trip to London like it was yesterday. My dance partner and I were going out there for a ballroom dance competition. Then after the competition we were going to stay there for an extra week so that we could take lessons from some of the top teachers in the world. Our coaches actually own a flat out there and we would be staying there. They stated that there is a train station just a block away, so that it would be silly to rent a car. We really ended up having a great time on this trip. We did end up using taxis a bit more than we thought we would, but we also were not too surprised by it either since we are used to driving everywhere.
